Gatewatching and Citizen Journalism [3]

Absolutely nothing unexpected happened on the weekend. [4] Absolutely nothing unexpected has happened since: though slow to work out which way the wind blows, Dennis Shanahan [5], Paul Kelly [6] and colleagues at the former (and future?) Government Gazette [7] have skipped nary a beat in switching to singing the praises of Kevin the Rudd. Only Glenn Milne seems to have missed the memo - he's still working on his hagiography of 'poor' Peter Costello [8]. Oh, and Caroline Overington, of course, who is making headlines for all the wrong reasons [9].

Two new entries for David Silver [10]'s 'Gone Gallery [11]', then:

John Howard [12]Peter Costello [13]

No doubt there'll be plenty of analysis in the aftermath of the election - not least of the role that citizen journalism and online media more generally have played in the overall election campaign. I feel pretty satisfied with my assessment from before the start of the campaign proper that Australia remains about one electoral cycle behind the U.S. in terms of the impact of citizen media on politics - and if a certain incredulous journalist from the local Murdoch paper [14] were to put aside her professional misconceptions for a moment, I'm sure she'd have to agree by now: bloggers [15] and citizen journalists [16] were an integral part of the political mediasphere that covered the Coalition's slow descent into oblivion.
